Deb Digs Plants is a micro nursery that grew from my passion for growing plants for my own garden. I love watching my garden develop from the first early snowdrops, to the riot of foliage and colourful flowers that spring and summer bring. The magnetic pull of the blooms for butterflies and bees, attracted by the nectar and pollen, is a marvel. In 2017, I had a crazy thought that perhaps I could sell some of my plants and share the joy of bringing wildlife into your garden. And so it began…
Biology was always my favourite subject at school and as a result I went on to study Zoology at university. With no internet in those days, and little careers advice, it didn’t occur to me that I could’ve pursued a career in something related to my degree. Instead I started out in the NHS as a biomedical scientist, where I attained my PhD, and ended up working in IT, in a large international company. Being made redundant, due to the offshoring of IT jobs, was tough, but it did give me the kick up the backside that I needed to get me back on track with doing something that made me happy.
So, after escaping from the corporate world, I started as a volunteer gardener at Doddington Hall gardens, just outside Lincoln. It was one of the most positive experiences I’d had for a very long time, and it came just at the right time for me. Apart from the gardens being an absolute delight and a privilege to work in, I learnt so much from the other gardeners and volunteers. Most importantly they were kind and friendly, which went a long way to help heal the wounds from my recent experience. The head gardener at the time encouraged me to pursue my dreams of setting up a plant business, and even offered me a table at the Doddington Hall Plant Fair. I’m so grateful for the support he gave me, and without it, I’m not sure if I’d be doing this right now.
I am currently studying for my RHS Level 2 exams while juggling all the jobs required of a one-woman band micro nursery. Loving it!
